Unfair agreement or not? The US Department of Justice investigates in the case of UPS's and FedEx's simultaneous announcements to freeze out third-party shipping negotiators and consultants. The investigation was started after AFMS - Logistics Management Group filed a lawsuit in this case. The company stated it already has negotiated the transport service contracts for more than 1,000 companies. Due to its firm knowledge of the structures and costs of transport companies, AFMS had achieved 'best-in-class' carrier service agreements for its customer, the house advertising reads.
This is obviously a thorn on the integrators side. In Summer both companies announced hat they would only deal directly with their customers. This decision was 'devastating' for AFMS's business the company said. Therefore AFMS decided to file a lawsuit against this step in August.
The Department of Justice already began a preliminary investigation at the end of November to examine whether the integrators infringed the cartel law with their announcement. Spokespersons for FedEx and UPS dismissed the allegations and said the companies would co-operate with the authorities.

“During this year we want to achieve a turnover of more than 100 million euros, and certainly carry 400 million items”. With this announcement, Günter Thiel, the PIN-Group CEO, confirmed these ambitious business objectives last week. As he also stated in a »Financial Times Germany« interview (03.01.), the concern, in which the Axel Springer, Holtzbrinck and WAZ publishing houses, as well as Thiel’s Rosalia holding company, have combined their postal activities, would double its turnover.
Thiel’s aim is to have realised 1bn euros in turnover by 2010, and he is setting his sights on a two-digit yield in the medium term. By this means, with a market share of 10%, he wants to establish the PIN-Group as the second largest supplier – behind Deutsche Post.
He added that more post boxes would be introduced throughout the Federal Republic this year and next, especially in locations that attract a great deal of people, such as shopping centres. According to Thiel, the company would like to provide its letter-post services in its own shops ("Letter Shops") and in collaboration with retailers.
